Hierarchical Single/Multi Select fields

#1

Would there be anyway you’d consider adding hierarchical single select columns that show different options depending on what is selected in a prior column?

For example in one column imagine that you have a list of car manufacturers labelled ‘Make’

Some options in here could be:

  • Audi
  • BMW
  • Ford
  • Volkswagen

Then you could have a second single select column called ‘Model’.

It would be great if this only showed options related to the first column.

So for example if Audi is selected in the first column the options could be:

  • A1
  • A3
  • A4
  • Q3
  • Q7

Whereas if Volkswagen was selected in the first column the options could be:

  • Beetle
  • Golf
  • Jetta
  • Polo
  • Scirocco

If that wasn’t possible, I’d settle with being able to group options with some label so that at least the field can provide guidance that’s not hidden behind the field description. So we would have:

Audi (not selectable)
A1
A3
etc…
Volkswagen (not selectable)
Beetle
Golf
etc…

When I need something like this I’ve opted to group based on color.

I too would appreciate hierarchical features. Organizations are normally hierarchical. Seeing records contained within a node of a hierarchy would be helpful.

Hierarchical tables are a challenge in most databases and spreadsheets that I have come across. Is this on Airtable’s roadmap?

New to this platform, and this would be a feature that is very helpful to me. We have thousands of inventory items and need to filter groups down in a hierarchical fashion to view smaller segments at a time. Let us know if that is something on the horizon.
