You should be able to do this by having a LOOKUP field in the CHILD record. So instead of inputting or updating a field in the Child field, you have it lookup that field in the PARENT record.
I’d set this up as two linked tables. One table is Competitions, which has a record for each competition (January 2021, February 2021, Special Valentine’s Day competition) and a date.

Weird. Maybe there’s an invisible unicode character at the start of that one record? Put your cursor after the first few characters and backspace all the way, save, and see if that moves it into its proper place, and then retype in the proper word.
