I have a table of participants in an organization. Visitors to the organization’s monthly meetings are added to the participant table via a form. A field called “status” identifies them as visitors. When a new visitor is added to the table, i would like a certain person to be alerted by e-mail. Is this possible?

You can definitely set this up fairly easily using Zapier—we have a tutorial for setting up custom email notifications using Zapier in this support article. The only thing you’d need to do first is set up a new view that contains just records marked as “visitors.” Let me know if you have any questions!
