Are these two ideas possible?

I need a column that I can put in a version number of some software but then on a regular basis it will perform a check online to a specific css selector of a site where the latest version is displayed. It should compare the two versions and change the cells background colour accordingly.

I have a date field but need to change the background colour of the cell to get progressively darker red as that date gets closer to the current date.
Are both of these possible and if so how can they be accomplished?
