I have several views that show the icons without the words - it's driving me crazy that I can't figure out how to put them back, or how they got this way in the first place.

Please send help!

 And please also don't ever make me have to deal with that truly circular, frustrating and unhelpful bot on the help bubble.

Zoom out in your browser by pressing CTRL + - (minus). The bar becomes compressed when either the view name is too big, etc. and can't fit them all properly. It goes away if you zoom out in your browser
