The calendar picker is rendered fairly useless when you try to add a non local date such as a birth date. Yes, you can enter the date as text. But a date picker is less error prone.
I suggest something like and arrow above and below the year in the calendar that would let you quickly spin forward or backward through the years. Might be worth while for the months also.
The side to side arrows remain for primal months in the current year.
Think about the date selection mechanism on iOS for inspiration : )
