Automatically add email address to user field from a different text field

Hi All,

I'm not sure if this request can be better accomplished with a formula or an automation, but it feels like an automation, so I figured I'd start here.

  • I have a form that populates several fields in a table, one of which is "Email Address".
  • I have a field that is marked "User" which is a multiple user field that contains either a) a Base team member (from the dropdown), b) an email address of an external user, c) or several users
  • I have set up a few different views in Interfaces that are controlled by this "User" field

Ideally, when a record is submitted via form I would like the email address they entered to be automatically added to the "User" field as a user so that they can then receive a link to access the Interface that shows their results. This is the use case 90%+ of the time.

Is there an easy way to make this happen? I seem to have figured out how I could automatically add a Base team member thru automations, but that is limited to our team and I can't figure out how to add an external user with an email address outside our domain if it's possible.

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Bonus work:

I do not need the automation to add several users at one time (though, if possible, I do have another multiple user field called "Read Access" that controls different visibility to a much larger group, as well as the list of people they originally add to the table in a field called "Collaborators"). I have been manually adding users from the "Collaborators" field to "Read Access". It's essentially the same process as the one above, except I'm adding several individual users to a record. This is far less common so I don't mind doing this manually, but it would be great if I could automate this too.

There is no automated way to do what you want to do within Airtable.

The best way to fully automate this would be to use a portal instead of Airtable’s native interfaces.

My favorite portal is Noloco, but other portals include Softr, JetAdmin, and Glide.

I give a step-by-step tutorial of Noloco on this episode of the BuiltOnAir podcast.

p.s. If you have a budget for your project and you’d like to hire an expert Airtable consultant to help you with any of this, please feel free to contact me through my website: Airtable consulting — ScottWorld

Thanks for letting me know it's not possible. Seems like something that should be an option since it's just taking some text from one field and sending it to another, but I do appreciate the help.
