Question

Copy Record Detail Layout

Forum|alt.badge.img+4

Hey everyone

Maybe I dreamed this, but I thought I could copy\transfer the layout of one existing Record Detail to another Record Detail.

I know I can duplicate an existing Record Detail layout to a new Record Detail layout. That creates a new layout which I want to avoid since I would have to reference the new layout to replace a depreciated layout. And I have a lot of those that I need to clean up. Updating an existing Record Layout by using a different record layout is pretty useful.

Is that possible? Was it ever possible?

Thanks everyone!

Yep, you can! When you’re editing an interface, you’ll want to click into the visualization you’re using (i.e. the List/Kanban/Gallery/etc.) so you can access those settings vs. just the Page settings. From there, the option at the very bottom should give you the functionality you’re looking for—just select the Record detail layout you want to use.

Thanks for the reply.

Not quite what I was looking for. I know that option you can create new layout or duplicate an existing one.

What I recall was an option where an existing record detail page layout can be copied into the layout of a different detail page.

For Example...

Detail Page A is used 10 different times in my interface
Detail Page B is used 8 different times in my interface

I want to transfer\copy the layout of Detail Page A into Detail Page B. This avoids making a duplicate of Detail Page A into Detail Page C and then redirecting all the Detail Page B references in my interface to Detail Page C.

I seem to recall there was an option to do that on the Record Detail Page in the menu located here. Am I crazy? Is there a better way to do this? I have like a dozen of these I need to do and transfer the layout from one page to the other page would save me a ton of time.

Cheers!

Hi @mbrinkley,

To change which layout is opened you should go the interface where the detailed page is opened and select which page is opened:

Hi @mtrebinonixon thanks for the suggestion. Though its still not what I was looking for.

I did some research and used the wayback machine to see if I can find what I was looking for and I found it. Glad I was not losing my marbles.

This feature use to be there in the Records Detail page: “Copy another record detail layout”.

You can see the old information here: Airtable interface layout: Record detail

That is what I am looking for. It was incredibly useful for me. From what I can tell, it looks like that has been removed as it is missing now in AirTable and the current documentation does not have this feature listed. Looks like it might have been removed end of last year.

I was hoping this feature still existed or was someplace else that I cannot find.

Anyone know if that is still around? Or is it gone? If its gone, i am not looking forward the amount of work I just created for myself with this missing feature.

Cheers!

The “Copy another record detail layout” does not exist now because it is not necessary. Before it was used becuase the detail layouts were all diferent from each point you accesed them. Now you can set to access the same record detail from several different interfaces. This was incredibly helpfull since it was impossible to keep all record details up to date individually.

And if you want to create a new record layout based off an existing record layout, you can use the “Duplicate current layout” that’s showing on my previous screenshot.

@mtrebinonixon Yeah I can see how that is the new workflow and that does make sense to me.

My use case is different.

I have 5 Record Details pages for one of my tables…

  • Details (Owner) - Used 18 Times
  • Details (Manager) - Used 8 Times
  • Details (Partner) - Used 5 Times
  • Details (Reports) - Used 1 Time

All of these use the same layouts with minor tweaks between them (some groups are editable, and some are not) but the layouts really are not different. The pages are used depending what interface a user gets.

I made a major overhaul to the Details (Owner) page. When I thought the “Copy another record detail layout” was still a feature, my plan was to copy the layout from Details (Owner) to Details (Manager) and make my couple of edits and then I am done.

But now the workflow will be...

Make a copy of Details (Owner) to Details (Manager) v2. Make my tweaks to v2. Find all 8 instances that use Details (Manager) and redirect them to Details (Manager) v2. I will need to do that for 4 of the details instances. Essentially, I have to dig out 14 different instances and redirect them all. Where before I could just update the layout and not be required to redirect to the v2 versions of the pages.

For me its even worse as I have those 5 detail pages for each of my tables (5 tables with 5 pages each that are all similar.

Now I have to create 20 new v2 Pages and redirect to the v2 Pages. Thats a lot of extra steps and work.

Whereas with the “Copy another record detail layout” feature, I could open each of the pages and copy the layout from the (Owner) page make a couple of tweaks and I am done. Far easier to make changes that way.

Since the “Copy another record detail layout” no longer exists, is there an easier way to manage this? I am totally open to learning better ways. I am just not excited about the hours of work to fix this when it was going to be a few minutes.

Hope that made any sense at all. And thanks for the input! I appreciate you answering my questions.

Cheers!
