Hello all. I am considering Airtable for a product/portal I need to build. I can't glean from the docs and other info how my setup would be billed or if it is achievable so am looking for some guidance.

- I manage a database with data relevant to different clients of mine.
- I want to share that data with the different customers I have via an interface for a nice user experience. Each client gets a login, and can see the data/projects relevant to them
- Those clients then have customers who need to have access to the specific projects relevant to them. Those clients will need logins also in order to access their specific projects
 - The only action both my clients and my client's clients need to take is updating the status of a row of data (think a list/queue of items to review and approve)

I have attached a crude diagram explaining it.

Is this setup achievable? How would it be billed?

Thanks,
Darrell

Every person that modifies the data would be billable I believe.  Given that you're planning on giving your clients and their customers Interface access, you'd probably use the new Portals feature (https://support.airtable.com/docs/using-airtable-portals-for-external-collaborators) that bills at $120 per month for 15 people on the Teams plan, on top of the $24 for your seat

I'm not really clear how pricing works if you've got > 15 people on the portal though, and pricing on Business/Enterprise isn't mentioned in the support doc either as far as I can tell, so if you do find out I'd love to know more too

You can look into using third party portals to that connect with Airtable to reduce costs, which would let you leverage the UI, automations etc of Airtable while also letting your clients and their customers do what they need to.  Some popular options would be Softr and Noloco; there are a whole bunch of them and a quick Google search will sort you out

Each of these portals will have their own foibles and you'll need to modify your workflows and potentially your data structures to accommodate them too, so bear in mind the maintenance costs as well as the pricing when you're weighing using these

There's another option where you try to use Airtable's portals and use form software like Fillout to let people modify data, but the user experience isn't that great and I figure you probably don't want that since this is client facing

The easiest & best & cheapest way of doing this would be 100% free!

You can make each customer a read-only user of their own data in Airtable, which wouldn’t cost you any money, because Airtable only charges for editors.

Then, for each record that you want them to edit, you would give them a button or a link that would open that record in Fillout’s advanced forms for Airtable, which allows you to update Airtable records from a form.

Fillout is 100% free and offers hundreds of features that Airtable doesn’t natively offer, such as the ability to update records with a form.

Otherwise, if you want your customers to edit their data within Airtable itself, using Airtable’s portals feature is very expensive because it costs $120 per month for a minimum of 15 customers, and $8 per month for each additional customer after that.

This is price prohibitive for many people, so you could always look at the other Airtable portals on the market, which are much less expensive.

The most popular portals that are currently available for Airtable: NolocoJetAdminSoftrPory, and Glide.

I give a brief demo of Noloco on this Airtable podcast episode. And I gave an entire one-hour webinar on Noloco called Building a Client Portal on Noloco powered by Airtable. The CEO of Noloco gave a demonstration of his product on this BuiltOnAir podcast episode.

But remember that you can do everything for free using Fillout’s advanced forms for Airtable, as I mentioned above.
