Hi everyone! I’m Izzy, a product manager here on the AI team at Airtable.

We’re excited to announce the launch of a new building experience in Omni, now available in AI Labs. When you state your goals or ideas in your own words, Omni will now create and confirm a plan before proceeding to build your Airtable apps.

Now, you’ll no longer need to translate your needs into Airtable-specific terms before asking Omni to build them. Instead, just tell Omni what you want to achieve, and it will design the right Airtable solution for you. Whether your request is broad (“I need to manage a content production pipeline”) or specific (“Notify my team when a project status changes”), Omni will piece together the right Airtable building blocks, then present a plan for you to review and confirm.

What does this unlock?

  • Outcome-oriented building: Just describe your workflow or problem, and let Omni handle the Airtable details. Spend less time thinking about the exact tables, fields, or interfaces you need to achieve your goal.
  • Consultative guidance: Omni will now clarify its plan with you before building, just like an expert Airtable builder would do.

How to try it today

Workspace admins can enable AI Labs from Account > Workspace Settings. Once enabled, describe the workflow or problem you want to solve in an existing app and watch your plan take shape.

Important details

  • This planning capability is in AI Labs and under active development. Your feedback will directly shape improvements.
  • This capability is only available in existing apps, and is not yet available for the creation of new apps.
  • This capability will only trigger for requests that Omni thinks are broad and workflow-oriented in nature. If you ask Omni to add an Airtable primitive like a table or automation, Omni will not present a plan.
  • You can turn this feature off in Omni settings

We can’t wait to see what you build with Omni!

This is very cool.  Is there any functionality for AI Generated elements to be able to inspect specific elements and communicate with Omni to make changes to specific elements.  Instead of referencing in the chat.

I am speaking specifically with AI-Generated custom Interfaces--I would love the following abilities:

  • Version control of edits.
  • Ability to work with a code editor or inspect certain produced elements to make changes.
  • Ability to remix custom extensions with Omni for more tailored personal environment.
  • Ability to have custom record detail view (see more below)
  • Better understanding of prompting for custom properties. Right now it doesn’t get custom properties on most attempts and they are often non-functional.

My prompt here was to make a custom page that laid out functionality for an improved user experience with a custom record detail view where there would be “tabs”, collapsing groups, and floating header.

  • the issue is that my prompting didn’t seem to be able to allow me to configure further and build upon or fix these elements.  LIke how the UI/UX is non-standard Airtable UI or how to have tabs or the editing.

My goal was to make the extension of improvements that would have features I would like Airtable record viewer to have.

  • Floating header
  • collapsing/envelope group headers
  • tabs for pagination
  • An edit button that can allow for turning on and off edit/view only ability to fields in a more simple fashion
  • hosting additional fields in the header, like a status field

Hi @drnemer! I’m hopping in here as the product designer on AI-generated interface elements. Thanks for all the great feedback. Some quick-fire answers to your requests:

  • Version control of edits
    • You can undo the last iteration you make with Omni using the Undo button in the chat. We are also releasing an enhancement later this week that will allow you to jump back to an earlier version of an AI-generated element.
  • Ability to work with a code editor or inspect certain produced elements to make changes
    • At this time, you can only download the code for an AI-generated interface element, but we are exploring ways to potentially make this code viewable and/or editable in the browser.
  • Ability to remix custom extensions with Omni for more tailored personal environment
    • For clarification, do you mean that you have a custom extension written with code that you’d like to iterate on with Omni?
  • Ability to have custom record detail view
    • Definitely something we are interested in exploring, thank you for the detailed example. To your point, we would like to support this in a more first class way so that you get a bunch of the standard record detail UI & configuration for free out of the box without having to recreate it yourself.
  • Better understanding of prompting for custom properties. Right now it doesn’t get custom properties on most attempts and they are often non-functional.
    • We have been iterating on improving the reliability of custom properties generated by Omni. If you have examples of prompts you tried that didn’t work, that would be helpful to the team (you can also leverage the thumbs up/thumbs down buttons the next time it happens!)

Hopefully that addresses some of your concerns! Please keep the feedback coming.
