Hello community,
I’d like to clean up our database a bit — especially fields and formulas that were created through “trial and error” and are no longer really needed.

What’s the best way to check whether a field in the database is truly not being used anywhere? Do you have any tips or best practices so I don’t accidentally break something?

For stuff within Airtable I pretty much just keep doing ‘Show dependencies’ and then running each of those down

For stuff outside Airtable, I try to add in ‘Used in Make’ or ‘Used in Zapier’ etc in the field descriptions, makes it a lot easier handling cleanup later on

@viktor.deri

In your data view, Airtable gives you 3 tools that can help with this:

  • Click on the “Tools” tab and choose “Manage Fields”.
  • Click on the “Tools” tab and choose “Relationships”.
  • You can right-click on an individual field’s column header and choose “Show Dependencies”.

Hey @viktor.deri,

Asnwers above are what you are looking for. If you want to be super exhaustive, something I sometimes do when trying to understand a new base I’m being “onboarded” to is to create Last Modified Time fields for a few fields which seem to be old/dirty/not used. If such field has not been used/edited during the past month or so, that usually tells you something about the need for such field..

Big pain to create multiple Last Modified Time fields though, and even then further context from the client is still needed.
