Hi-

I’m trying to use Airtable to automatically fill fields in a document based on the Airtable fields. I found the perfect app that does just this, however there are NO videos from others or discussion on this. I’ve been testing this app, and it works great! Except for a date field. It seems there is a bug in the app as no matter what, if I make the Date field a text field, a single select, a linked, no matter what it just won’t pick it up. I did email the developer but wondering if anyone else has had luck with this. I do not prefer to use Zapier or a 3rd party app. I do see the option for an automation but struggling with that as well. So far this seems to be the best option if only I could figure out this date issue. The app is Word Document Auto-Fill and the developer’s site is linked to the AT site. https://airtable.com/marketplace/blkxzMlA4V5bcZh2w/word-document-auto-fill

Hm, I tried the app with the Demo Base they created on the Universe and it managed to generate the date fine.  Here’s the base I experimented with

Here’s the demo doc:

And here's the generated doc:

If you could private message me a link to your base I could poke at it to see what I can figure out if you’d like!

Hey @Jasmine_Ruth1,

I did not know about this extension actually! So thanks for sharing.

Date mapping works fine on my side as well.

Unrelateded to your specific question, do note that this extension seems to have similar limitations to those of Page Designer extension (e.g. no automatic download, no in bulk download, etc). Also, not super sure if it gets to handle dynamic lines (e.g. one or multiple line items for invoices). If you ever hit some of such limitations do remember that you can set your own version of this using automation tools like make or n8n.

Completely different matter, but would love to have you join our Airtable Hackathon! Make sure to sign up!!

@Jasmine_Ruth1

Yes, thanks for sharing this extension.

It looks like this extension hasn’t been updated in several years, so it’s hard to know if it’s still being supported or if the developer will answer your questions.

However, note that it doesn’t link back to the Airtable website (as you mentioned). It gives a link to the developer’s website at this link, and it gives a support email of this address: pzn.app@gmail.com

Although as @Mike_AutomaticN mentioned above, extensions have significant limitations such as:

  • They can’t be automated in any way.
  • They don’t work in interfaces.
  • They can’t insert documents into attachment fields.

So it is typically recommended to use 3rd-party apps to create Microsoft Word documents.

I do this by using Make’s Microsoft Word integrations alongside Make’s Airtable integrations.

If you’ve never used Make before, I’ve assembled a bunch of Make training resources in this thread. For example, here is one way that you can instantly trigger a Make automation from Airtable.

Hope this helps!

@Mike_AutomaticN YES! Thanks for the invite! I actually just recently attended an in person hackathon in Beverly Hills held by Airtable and one of our clients! It was enlightening and helpful to bounce ideas off each other and share how we use AT. I just signed up.

Thanks for your feedback, after seeing it was working well for you and others I realized I wasn’t linking the data correctly in the AT tabs. I tried adding this in my own base but using the AT Universe Template is helping me understand how to connect the data to make this work. I’ve used AT since 2015 and would call my self an advanced not quite expert Airtable user but that has no background or knowledge in coding. Usually my limitations are due to the lack of coding knowledge and not understanding the back end of apps. Luckily this would be for creating contracts and the system will work perfectly once I can get through the setup. Having this upload to AT is not needed and we can easily manually do if we wish.

Page Designer, ugh, many share that frustration as it’s just so close to being there and having to have a 3rd party app just for one final step is a bummer. Anyway, look forward to the hackathon!
