While trying to import a CSV file in Airtable, I got the least helpful error message possible:

Not very informative! If anyone’s seen this and has a suggestion, I’m all ears…

That message might mean Airtable hit something in the CSV that it couldn’t parse. It might be a formatting issue, an unexpected character, or something else.

A simple way to narrow it down is to try importing a different CSV. If that works, you’ll know the issue is in the original file.

As an alternative, you can also use Spreadsheet Import (I built it). It handles CSV quirks better and can help you bring the file in.

Thank you, Taha! I will check out your extension.

In case anyone else hits this frustratingly cryptic error, the problem was an inability to import into a linked field. Export from another base to CSV exports only the text value of the primary field, not the record ID, and Airtable threw this error rather than attempting to match the primary field to the record.

Resolution: I could have handled this many different ways, but as it was only a few rows, I was happy to discover that simply creating a share view and using cut-and-paste from the share view brings in the link to the correct record successfully.

Cheers all,

Natalka
