I’ve been doing my research as to which program will suit my not-for-profit and airtable has come up as the leader on several fronts. I’m a little overwhelmed and trying to find the best place to start - I dont know what I need because i dont know what airtable is capable of at the moment. which course should i begin with in the academy? where did everyone learn airtable? i want to be a master!

I reckon try out the template quick starts (Sales CRM, Event Planning etc): https://academy.airtable.com/page/course-catalog#filter-by-type_quick-starts

They’ll give you an idea of what you can do with Airtable, and then if you hit roadblocks while trying to do it yourself you can look for the appropriate course to handle it

I also do free half hour calls and would be happy to answer any burning questions you might have and see if Airtable’s a good fit for what you need!

You might gain some valuable insights by taking my free Airtable training course, which you can take for free by signing up for a free 30-day trial with LinkedIn Learning.

Note that the course is very outdated because it was created many years ago using one of the very earliest versions of Airtable. It was created before automations even existed, and it was created years before interfaces existed!

However, the core concepts of building a base remain the same to this day — such as working with linked record fields, working with lookup fields, and how to properly structure your base.

Hope this helps!

Hey @aimes_,

As mentioned above, the Airtable Academy is a great place to start. In addition to the other resources shared, feel free to also check the different videos on my YouTube channel.

A video which is not mine, but which I highly encourage you to take a look at: Data Normalization (not Airtable specific, but still really really helpful for structuring your base).

Completely different matter, but would love to have you join our Airtable Hackathon! Make sure to sign up!!

I second @Mike_AutomaticN Data Normalization video recommendation, I come at Airtable from a non-technical perspective (and from the non-profit field too, Museums initially) and that video was extremely helpful in giving me a base understanding of database systems (which is what Airtable actually is).

As for getting started, my recommendation is really to create some bases and play around with the tool itself. Personally I find the Academy stuff not helpful until you’ve spent some time playing around, otherwise it’s all just abstract talk. I feel much the same about watching YouTube tutorials, the best way to learn is by doing. Pick a minor challenge, like a program sign up or attendance tracking, and try to build it. Play with automations and formula to improve the base functions and then you'll have a better grounding for Airtable Academy and such.

Also, don’t use AI. Just asking AI to build you something means you don’t understand how the tool works and you won’t be able to troubleshoot or fix inevitable problems. Later on it might come in handy for a complicated formula or script, but at least initially it’s more unhelpful than anything.

Feel free to shoot me a DM if you’d like more perspective from a non-profit perspective, all my AT work has been in the field (museums and now social services).
