Yes, because clearly a hack is much better than a proper metadata API.

If it’s based off a single select field (for example Status), it’s based off the ordering of the options. In this case, changing the sort order (even if the Status field), doesn’t actually change the column sorting.

Just create multiple fields that link to the particular table and name as appropriate.

But if there’s a need for multiple views with the same fields (such as different filter or group criteria) it’s back to the tediousness of individually hiding multiple fields.
