Thanks for the response Karlstens. Are you using an extension to achieve this? I cannot find a way to say select a record in a field and associate an external URL to this.

No extension as such, typically I manage hyperlink creation within my records using formula fields, that reference other text fields within the record, the final result being a dynamic link that changes depending on that record.
