Question

Roadmap of table? Any built-in way to do it?

Forum|alt.badge.img+4

I’m dealing with a table with many fields, and finding it unwieldy. I’m working on a map of the fields that lists them in the order they appear in the Master List and also logs info about each field. Screenshot below.

Is there anything in Airtable or any integrated app that can do this automatically?

Any other tips for managing tables with many fields?

I don’t know of anything that can auto-build the whole map, but you can get most of the way there.  The Scripting extension can loop through a table’s fields and write each one’s name, type, description, and options into a “Field Directory” table, so you’d only need to fill in the manual columns (automations, interface usage, notes).  The field manager can come in handy for reordering and hiding fields.  I also believe it will show dependencies before you edit or delete one.

For general tips: use field descriptions to record the purpose of each field and keep a consistent naming convention (the numbering you’re already using works well), and hide everything a given view doesn’t need.

Thanks! What is the Scripting extension? (is there a written guide for it? … I couldn’t find one when I did a search). Do I have to be able to code to use it?

If you go into the Data layer of your base, and then click on the “Tools” menu in the right-hand side of the toolbar, you will see both “Relationships” and “Manage Fields”.

One or both of those tools might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Beyond that, you might also want to check out On2Air Backups, which backs up the schema & metadata of your base, which is exactly what you’re looking for! (It also backs up your data as well.)
