I know there is no documented way to get the activity feed information via the API, but I was wondering if anyone has ever managed to easily monitor as records last updated status or created some special field to track it somehow?

There is a beta for Last Modified time Function and Field Type. Maybe you can apply and use it (I don’t know how the API works).
