Hi everyone,

I always found Airtable formulas a bit tricky, so I built a Chrome extension called Airtable AI Formula Builder. It lets you describe what you want in plain English (e.g. “combine first name and last name”), and it instantly generates the correct Airtable formula.

👉 Extension link: Ai formula builder

It’s a freemium tool: you can try it once for free to see how it works, and then unlock unlimited usage with a small upgrade.

This is the very first version (MVP), and I’d love your feedback:

  • What formula types do you use the most?
  • What extra features would make this more useful for you?

Thanks a lot, every bit of feedback helps me improve it 🙏

Hey @Benniex,

Thanks for sharing! This is fun and interesting. I love how lately there have been multiple posts on different Airtable related projects here in the community.

My thoughts/questions.

1. How is it different to the “Create formula with AI” native button? -see screenshot below. To be honest, I don’t think I ever used it.
2. Does it get to “store” some context in case you need to iterate on the provided formula if it did not fully work?

Hey @Mike_AutomaticN , thanks for checking it out 🙏

  1. Great question! The main difference is that Airtable’s “Create with AI” button is part of their paid AI package. My extension works out of the box, even for free users, and it’s focused purely on formulas. It uses external AI models tuned for formula generation, so you don’t need an Airtable AI plan or credits to use it.
  2. At the moment it’s single-shot, you enter a request and get a formula instantly. But I’ve been considering adding a lightweight “chat with AI” section in a future update so you can iterate/refine formulas without starting over.

💡 Also worth mentioning: it’s a one-time unlock (lifetime access). So once you unlock it, you’ll get all future feature updates for free, no recurring subscription.

My goal with this MVP was to keep it simple, lightweight, and accessible to anyone without Airtable’s full AI upgrade.

@Mike_AutomaticN Actually, since you’ve been in the community for a while can I ask:

👉 Is there anything you feel Airtable is missing (something small but really useful) that you’d personally pay for if it existed?

I’d love to know what power users like you wish existed, it could help me prioritize what to build next.

Hey @Benniex,

I see! I do believe it is useful, however I am also just one click away of chatgpt always. So not sure how much added value this would bring. If the extension itself could access my database schema to fetch field names, that might be different. Yes, having something Airtable specific, for sure… But again, not sure I would personally pay for it.

Having said that, I absolutely love that you are building stuff for Airtable. I really enjoy playing around with them!

Oh, and re: 👉 Is there anything you feel Airtable is missing (something small but really useful) that you’d personally pay for if it existed?

Need #1: MORE POWERFUL FORMS!!!!!!! But having said that, Fillout has already taken care of that solution.

Not as important, but the other thing that comes to my mind:
Some tool for streamlining migration in a really efficient way. Maybe leveraging AI for normalizing data.. I’ll try to find a different community post were this idea was discussed.

Other than that, most of the ideas I have require way more in depth Airtable changes which could not be handled via extension.
