Grid/table components

Hi Airtable team,

I’m writing because I noticed a recent change in the way linked-record fields behave inside Interfaces, specifically in grid/table components.

Until this week, it was possible to enter data extremely efficiently by simply clicking on the empty row and typing the first letters of a linked record. The matching record would appear instantly, without having to open the dropdown first. This made data entry much faster, especially when pasting or entering multiple records in a row.

Since the latest update, it is no longer possible to type directly into the cell to trigger autocomplete. We now must click to open the dropdown and then manually search inside it. This significantly slows down workflows for users who rely on Interfaces for rapid data entry.

For many of us who use Interfaces as our primary workspace — especially those handling large volumes of records daily — this change has a major negative impact on productivity.

Could you please consider restoring the previous inline editing/autocomplete behavior for linked-record fields inside Interfaces, or at least provide a setting to enable it?

This small change made a very big difference in day-to-day usage.

Thank you for your help — and for considering bringing back this extremely useful behavior.

Best regards,
Philippe

Hm, I just tried this and it worked fine in the data layer and for Interfaces, I didn’t have to open the dropdown.  I’m using Firefox on a Mac if that helps?

Hey @DFW,

This is working on my side. Just in case, please do give this a shot on a different browser, and also just in case you might want to try clearing cache and/or using incognito mode?

If the issue persists you will want to reach out to support@airtable.com. Make sure to ask for a human response :D

Wow, I can see it’s working on your side exactly the way I want it to work for me. Unfortunately, whether I use Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or even the Airtable Mac app, it still doesn’t work on my end.

That’s….really strange.  Extremely long shot, but could you test it on the following?

  1. New computer
  2. New base
  3. New account

Here is my video to show you exactly what the issue looks like:

I’ve tried every browser — Safari, Firefox, Chrome — and even the Airtable Mac app.
I also tested on another computer and I’m still experiencing the same issue.

Commenting here to join the convo, my team is running into the exact same issue as DFW on multiple computers, all using Chrome, and we weren’t running into this issue last week. We also can’t copy and paste within the interface grid views.

Hm yeah I think you both may want to open a support ticket directly with Airtable to see whether they can help I’m afraid

After watching that video I went to try creating a Grid inside a Record Detail, with the primary field as the Linked Field to another table but that worked fine for me.  Copy pasting was fine too.  Sorry I couldn’t help!

Hello,
The issue was noticed yesterday or the day before. Before that, everything worked normally. In the meantime, it’s working again as usual. So I’m not sure whether this is a “problem” with Airtable or something to do with the browser. I’m working here with Chrome. Therefore I can confirm that I’ve had the same issue before, but it mysteriously disappeared again.
