How to hide/remove “Uncategorized” stack in Kanban element on Airtable Interface Designer?

Hi everyone,

I’m using a Kanban element in Airtable Interface Designer, stacked by a Single Select field.

The issue is that an extra stack called “Uncategorized” keeps appearing, even though:

  •  “Uncategorized” is not an option in my Single Select field
  • One of the Single Select options is already set as the default
  • I checked the records and found no records where this Single Select field is empty

I also found an old community thread from around 9 years ago discussing a similar issue: [HERE]

From what I understand, the suggested workaround was to collapse the stack, but I couldn’t find a clear solution to fully hide or remove it. Please correct me if I missed something

Has anyone found a current workaround for this in Interface Designer Kanban?

Thank you!

In edit mode, click on your kanban chart, and then in the right margin, choose “hide empty stacks”.

Hi @ScottWorld, thank you for the suggestion.

I understand that “Hide empty stacks” can hide the Uncategorized stack if it is empty. However, I don’t want to hide all empty stacks.

In my use case, the Kanban is used to let users update the Current Status by dragging records from one stack to another. So even if one of the valid status stacks is currently empty, I still want it to remain visible as a drop target. If it is hidden, users can’t drag records into that status anymore.

That’s why I’m only trying to hide the “Uncategorized” stack, not all empty stacks.

My goal is to let users change the Current Status directly through this Interface Kanban. Please let me know if the Kanban element in Airtable Interface Designer is not really designed for this type of workflow, or if there is another recommended setup for this use case.

Thank you again.

Unfortunately Airtable just adds “Uncategorized” for any Kanban board visualization and I don’t think there’s a way to remove it. The workaround here is to use the hide empty stacks solution that @ScottWorld mentioned above and keep placeholders records in the other stacks that you want to always show up. But I’d add this to the Product Ideas box here / mention to your CSM if you have one since this does feel like it should be built in functionality.

@yusri

Oh, I see — you want to hide the “uncategorized” stack when it’s empty, but not hide the other empty stacks when they’re empty.

Yeah, unfortunately, as @phoebelindo said, that is not possible. You can use her workaround idea of keeping at least one placeholder record in each stack at all times, but besides that, there’s nothing else that we can do.

Also, as she said, be sure to submit this as a feature request using the product feedback form here.

Hope this helps!

Thank you both, @phoebelindo anda @ScottWorld

That makes sense now. I just wanted to confirm whether there was a specific setting to hide only the empty “Uncategorized” stack while keeping the other empty status stacks visible as drop targets.

I understand now that this is currently not possible in Airtable Interface Kanban. The only workaround is to use “Hide empty stacks” and keep placeholder records in the valid status stacks that need to remain visible.

I’ll consider that workaround for now, although it’s not ideal for my workflow, since the goal is to let users update the Current Status by dragging records between stacks directly in the interface.

I’ll also submit this as a product feature request.

Thank you again for the clarification!

In Airtable Interface Designer, the “Uncategorized” stack appears in a Kanban element when some records have an empty value in the field used for grouping. To remove it, make sure every record has a value in that grouping field, or filter out blank records. Open the Kanban element settings → go to Filters → add a condition like “Group field is not empty.” You can also use an automation or default field value to prevent future blank records.
