This function is available for the base. When I search there, the scanner symbol appears.

I can scan using a form and would also like to be able to scan and then edit the product.

Interface is a great tool for mobile uses as it is fully customisable.

In the meantime, I started using a standalone barcode scanner (DS2278 from Zebra).
It works just like a physical keyboard. Works good but is little bit of an investement.
+16+1 on this. Since the feature is already available on the Data layer it's a low development effort to bring it to interfaces and would help a lot!!
