Question

Is it possible to freeze the first column in a List Interface?

Hi everyone,

I’m building a List Interface in Airtable and would like to know if it’s possible to freeze (or lock) the first column, similar to how you can freeze columns in grid views.

When scrolling horizontally through fields in the List layout, the first column (which usually contains key identifiers like names or IDs) scrolls out of view, making it difficult to track which record I’m looking at.

Is there a built-in way to freeze the first column in a List Interface, or any workaround that others have found helpful?

Thanks in advance for any insights or suggestions!

Yeah, it’s so strange that you can’t freeze the first column in a list view. That would be extremely handy for many of my clients.

Be sure to submit it as a feature request on the product feedback form.

Alternatively, you could switch that list view into a grid view by using the visualization options, but then you’ll lose the unique features of the list view (such as hierarchies).

Of course, if you select multiple visualization options, your users can toggle between different visualizations, so they can always toggle back-and-forth between list and grid.

Hope this helps!

Hey @Sean_Maher!

You might want to submit this as a Product Idea using this form.

Completely different matter, but would love to have you join our Airtable Hackathon! Make sure to sign up!!

If anyone from Airtable’s Product Team is following this thread, I’d like to strongly advocate for this improvement.

There’s a key inconsistency between List and Grid views that significantly impacts usability.

  • List view allows customizing column (field) names, so each interface can have its own label for the same data, but it does not support freezing the first column.
  • Grid view supports freezing the first column, but only displays raw field names, without the option to customize them.

Requested improvement:
Enable both column name customization and column freezing consistently across views - ideally allowing user-friendly labels (aliases) to be displayed in Grid view as well. That said, supporting freezing the first column in List view is the more critical need.

Why this matters:
In many use cases, field names are structured for API and backend logic, while Interfaces present user-friendly labels - often localized into different languages.

This inconsistency between views creates friction when switching contexts and makes it harder to work efficiently with larger datasets.

I also submitted this idea a few weeks ago, but hopefully this thread can help bring more visibility to it.

Hey @michalszymkowiak,

I’d highly suggest you submit this as a Product Idea/Feature Request using this form

➕☝🏻 Yes, I want that feature too… is there a place we up/down vote requests?

No @coderkid - it must be shared via form linked by @Mike_AutomaticN

So I will leave template message here- maybe it will help others submit feedback.

Anyone, fell free to use and modify it if needed!

Dear Airtable Product Team,

I would like to suggest a feature that has already been discussed in the Airtable Community: freezing the first column in Interfaces (List view), along with improving consistency between List and Grid views.

Thread: https://community.airtable.com/interface-designer-12/is-it-possible-to-freeze-the-first-column-in-a-list-interface-46725?tid=46725

Current limitations:

  • List view allows customizing field labels (user-friendly names), but does not support freezing the first column.
  • Grid view supports freezing the first column, but only displays raw field names (no label customization).

Requested improvement:

  • Enable freezing the first column in List view (highest priority).
  • Ideally, also allow custom field labels (aliases) in Grid view to ensure consistency across views.

Why this matters:
In many use cases, field names are designed for API and backend logic, while Interfaces display user-friendly labels - often localized into different languages.

This creates friction when switching between views and makes it harder to work efficiently with larger datasets, especially when horizontal scrolling is required.

Unifying these capabilities across views would significantly improve usability and workflow consistency.

Thank you for considering this improvement.

Grid view also has the extra benefit of displaying the summary bar, but there is no summary bar in List view. 😫😭
