One of my fields is a link to another table. I’d like end-users who are using the Form to add data to be able to create new records in the linked table but from the primary table data entry form.

Push! It would help me a lot!

I want my coworkers to enter data through forms, as these allow me to make some fields mandatory for them to fill out among other reasons. However, as soon as I have a linked table and the record does not yet exist, they cannot fill out the form. I would really like this to work!

Thanks in advance, Airtable team!

This would help substantially!

Let us know if this is on the horizon!

Thanks Airtable.

Hi @Matt_Bush

Justine didn’t reply with more info, but I have the exact same issue and I thought I would add my voice as this is something that I sorely need. Here’s how we are planning on using forms:

I have a workspace where one of the tables has approx 1000 records - these records are musical arrangements (sheet music) for my choir.

The idea is that as our staff want to add to our repertoire, they will use the form to add a new arrangement to the table. One of the fields in the form is “arranger” - another is “composer” and a third is “lyricist”. All three fields are linked back to a separate table consisting of a huge list of artists (a composer can also be a lyricist for example, so they all share the same table).

As the staff member enters the details on the piece, they should not only be able to select an existing composer/lyricists/arranger, but given the option to add a new one. Right now, this isn’t possible - they can only select an existing one, and this is a major limitation in using the form. In the majority of cases, the composer/lyricist/arranger won’t already exist in the linked table, so in the majority of cases, the form to add a new piece of music is unusable.

To make sure I’m being 100% clear, here are a couple of screens comparing the lookup field view in a form vs in a grid:

After entering nearly 1000 records in my main table in preparation for end-user use, I am devastated to find that this functionality is missing at the 11th hour. I should have tested it earlier I guess, but for now it means that I’ll have to continue to enter the data myself 😟

Is there any update on when we can expect word back on the form view improvements you mentioned? Many thanks!

If the “Add new record” button was added to Forms that would a big improvement for me, so that I don’t have to force users through another form just to add the option they wanted to type.

Adding a +1 to this. @Airtable is this on the roadmap anytime soon? If yes, I’ll wait to build my forms until it comes out.

Thanks!

@Matt_Bush any updates? I am exploring AirTable for my organization. The idea is to basically share my workload with another team so that I am not stretched so thin. The trick is getting this other team to do the work. Without being able to add new records to other tables in the same base from the Form view, they’ll never do it. It won’t work. It looks like this is a repeatedly requested feature. Since it can be done from grid view, I don’t understand why it can’t be done from Form view. Please help!

Need this feature too.

Come on guys. Give us this feature 🙂

Need this urgently too!

100% PLEASE add this functionality. We’ve been discussing this for 2 years…

This would be really useful for a project I’m prototyping too…

Hi Justine! Currently it’s only possible to select a record that already exists in shared forms, not to add a new linked record.

We plan on making feature improvements to form view in the coming months. If you can tell us more about how you’d like to use forms, that would be helpful for our planning process!

Hi Matt. Please help us fixing this issue with the add-new-record-in-forms-field-with-linked-record issue. We are using Airtable in a big way across two companies. I can also see there is some other frustrated users out there. This is a very important step to really be able to automate things. This absent feature still require a lot of manual labour. To take an example. On our livestock marketing platform in the Agriculture industry we require users to enter their details for new deals. Obviously old users will just pop up in the form, but new users need to enter their names and then we have to manually enter them in the linked record column. Now we have to look to Zapier or other workflow integrations to let this happen. Very impractical. I hope to hear from you soon. Kind regards

Hi Matt,

I have several paying clients who are not very technically inclined keep asking for this feature. Is there a workaround for this feature?

I have lost customers in the past because the explanation of why this feature works in Grid View, but doesn’t work in Form View is always very weak.

+1

Please create this! This is a large pitfall 👎t5: 👎t5: 👎t5: 👎t5: 👎t5: 👎t5: 👎t5:

Hi everyone. I hope this reaches the team at Airtable. My scenario is that I’m just testing out products similar to yours and I just wanted to let you know that, unfortunately, I’m going to have to pass on Airtable because I was looking precisely for the OP’s feature. It’s a pity, because Airtable looks like a great product. Unfortunately I need a product right now so I must move on and continue my search through other products. But, I want to wish you the best of luck. I’m most certain that your other users–both existing and future–absolutely need this feature.

Would help us in our meetings form submission. +1 for this feature

Jason what products are you looking at?

I’m in the same boat and if you’re looking at Coda, they have issues of their own and I don’t recommend them. Airtable and Coda need to have a baby and we might actually get a product we all want.

Yes AirTable… only posting to confirmthis feature is required… get cracking ! wayyyyy over due

I need this so much…

Please add this feature! This should be an easy fix! You have it working in Grid View. My clients aren’t the most skilled when it comes to this stuff. The ability to create new linked records while in a form is a critical function.

+1 would love to have this feature.

+1 over here too! Would be such a useful feature to allow wider team members to contribute to our Base from a nice form view.

+1 Definitely need this functionality.

Not sure a specific use case is necessary to understand what is needed. “+ Add new record” is available as an option when entering data into a linked grid view; we need the same option available when entering data into the corresponding form view. Ideally, this functionality would come with a toggle, so when off (false), the form user cannot add a new record; when on (true), the form user CAN add a new record.

Any chance this solution is on the horizon?

Any update on this functionality? This would immensely help with workflow and coordination of services in our organization.

Adding my ask for this feature too. Would be extremely helpful!

+1, this is definitely one of the most important features that I need
