I would love to see basic text formatting options for the long text field. At a minimum: bold and italic formatting would be a huge help.

I would like to use long text fields to store short bios for writers. But without the ability to have italic formatting, I can’t properly format the titles of their books.

The markdown formatting tools available in this Airtable community message editor would be perfect.

Please please please. This app would save my life if it only had the slightest markup capability.

I put a list of companies in a google sheet, and then needed to make an easy-to-read document that summarized each company. So I made a google doc that gave an elevator speech for each company, with bullet points and bold phrases. If AirTable had markup, I could merge these two things. As it is, I have to maintain two docs and update everything twice.

After a year or so of using Airtable, we’re finally moving somewhere else because this feature doesn’t exist. What a shame! Can’t believe y’all didn’t build this.

It’s ironic that I can use Markdown to emphasize how disappointed I am that there’s no Markdown in AirTable text fields.

Please please add in text formatting/markdown. Would be so helpful in organise/prioritise content through bullet points, creating bolded items, linking urls (rather than the full messy cumbersome entire link). Even basic bullet points, hyperlinking and some basic text styling would be of massive help for presentation and legibility particularly when sharing with sharing with other contributors.

We use this tool to register all desired A/B tests. For this we also need to set up goals in Optimizely. For this list I need to be able to give a good description including bullet points and making text bold/italic

I just signed up to Airtable, hoping to migrate over from Google Sheets because of the better user experience. However, I’m sad to discover that it’s not possible to add a Rich Text field to new tables. This would make a huge difference to the ability for me to upload content to my webflow CMS.

Is there a plan for when we may be able to expect this feature from Airtable? (ironic that I’m writing this with easy markups/in a RTE)

At least to store notes or text data with some layout

BONUS:

  • #hastag in text would be awesome to search
  • link in text to link other records

Welcome to the forum @Karoline_Andersen!

I agree - even simple markdown would be ideal. But, did you know that there’s nothing stopping you from creating and managing markdown or even HTML content in long text fields now?

I do this all the time. Using the API to fetch or manual export, markdown tags are sustained and when they are rendered in the CMS, it all works.

Hello. I also expect long-text format updates!

Markdown and rich content are different things, it is better to think separately.

If you are optimizing for Markdown, I would like an experience like Chrome extension StackEdit.

The following is the mock I made. The input field of Airtable is not textarea, so this Chrome extension does not work.

Exactly how it should be formatted. I use the long text field to communicate information…
use case: when performing a lease check (oil and gas field) it is great to be able to add proof of what you searched by doing a screen shot and attaching it to my notes. Is it easily indexable information? No, but long text fields in databases are not traditionally indexed anyway! The point is, it is information that aids a users who has already found the field they want, and just need to see the background/history of the record.

another use case: insurance industry phone calls. When dealing with third party payers, documentation is king. Again, in my notes / journal of a call, I would like to be able to take screen shots, attach call logs, bold text for the next user who is coming behind me and needs to see excerpts of the most important information from my notes.

Yes, rich text (ideally markdown so it is portable) in Long Text (or a new field type) would be incredibly useful.

Hi everyone! I’m so excited to let you all know that the beta for rich text formatting is coming very soon!
In the beta, expect to see:

  • Text formatting, like bold and italics
  • The ability to hyperlink text
  • Bulleted lists (like this one!), as well as numbered lists and checkboxes
  • And more!

Excited? Sign up for the beta using this form.

:bulb: Tip: if you click through to the form, one of the form fields actually allows you to take the new formatting options for a test run!

Wow, @Katherine_Duh this is great news!

Honestly, it’s kind of bittersweet. As the original poster of this suggestion, I will miss this long-running thread, and the feeling that I had really identified something so many other people wanted. I knew you guys would come up with something eventually.

Just signed up for the beta and can’t wait to start testing it out!

+1 for markdown

Managing approved text / copy for teams, loses any/all formatting when it gets to Airtable, makes it very hard to maintain.

Hello Ario
I can see you have been searching for a solution on this… did you find any alternatives so far?
I have +100s of product descriptions which are completely unusable when exported into shopify, being squashed into one big paragraph.
Many thanks
Christie

@Katherine_Duh I signed up for the Beta a few weeks ago but never heard back. When can I expect to use this functionality?

+1 - I’m also very excited to try out rich text beta feature. That will solve two problems for me:

#1) The bulleted list will allow me to list out sub-tasks under a super-task, in a way that is cumbersome to do today (using a ‘sub-category’ field remove that super-task from the list of other tasks)

#2) The rich text and bulleted lists in particular will allow me to keep notes on clients that I have touchpoints with. Today I have to use a separate Evernote notebook to keep those notes, but it’s much nicer to have notes tied into the relational database

I have signed up for the beta but haven’t gotten a response yet - hope I get included soon!

The RichText feature is great and clean, but it miss a (hard to code) feature:

Can you add the ability to hot link a record like it is possible with the @ shortcut ?

Usecase :

  • I have an AirTable of Dialogs
  • I have an AirTable of Sound effects

I want to write something like: The hero draw it’s sword {swing sword} then charge the dragon {foot step} {roar}

Be able to autocomplete a list of word would help to write and reuse text in a clean way. It’s an elegant workaround whereas now I have columns sound1 sound2 sound3

I’m testing the rich text feature and it works well for the most part but I’d like to leave some feedback for what I consider to be necessary improvements and fixes for rich text in the Page Designer block:

  • Bold doesn’t work all the time; sometimes the block of text appears with two asterisks on either side instead of bold, sometimes within the same line some blocks appear in bold and others with asterisk
  • It seems like you cannot change the font of a rich text field. The font size stays the same as what was originally set before changing the field type to rich text.
  • There doesn’t seem to be a way of making the bold letters visibly bold - this probably relates to the previous comment as a change of font would probably help here.

I am really loving the Rich Text Field feature. It’s really neat.
What I wish now is to have the Description Block to be same as the Rich Text Field. The Description Block is not as good as Rich Text Field. And also I would love to have same experience in both places.

I would love text (in all places) to behave consistently. If you ask for both, it won’t be long before the third use case will present itself.

Ideally, Markdown transformations would be consistently applied wherever text can be used. This is far more difficult than simply saying it because rendering must be abstracted from actual lookup values, indexes, etc.

Another issue - imagine use cases where rendering with rich styling is fine for humans, but not so good for formulas - you will then need an ability to transform anything into plain text.

Lots of dependencies emerge when you ask for something so [seemingly] simple.

I figured out that the text in bold doesn’t work (i.e., it gets wrapped in double asterisks) when parsing to a page designer block when the selected text ends with a space.

Also known as Markdown, which is not really a “Rich Text” implementation. But, I love the choice of Markdown for this support. However, I think this is yet another of the many dependencies that I referred to above.

I too applied to join BETA testing. How long does it take to get in?

Any updates on this? I’ve been waiting for this feature, thinking it would come out of beta. Do we still need to sign up for the beta at this point?
