It would be very helpful if next to a date field there was a today button that would fill the current date in the field.

+21There’s a hotkey for that. On the Mac, it’s Command-; (semicolon). Probably CTRL-; for Windows. If you prefer using the mouse, double-click on a date field, and there’s a “Today” button on the popup calendar that appears.
