URL--Text to Display Feature

I think it would be nice to have the option to hyperlink with different text showing, like any basic HTML hyperlinking. Like I can even do in this forum if I needed to.

Visually, having the url just there isn’t appealing.

Hey Samantha,

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. We’re looking to update our text editing experience soon, to provide better formatting which would include link title editing.

+1 for this. Looking forward to this feature.

Same here! Would like a company name to appear, but be linked to their website when clicked on.

+1 for this as well, seems like a no brainer.

@Andrew, just wondering whether this has been implemented?

I literally just spent an hour scouring the internet trying to figure out how to make this happen. Any word on deployment here?

+1 for this feature. I can’t use Airtable (though I wanted to) because I need to show link titles, not the entire URL.

Hi Andrew,

Has this feature been implemented yet? I want to use Airtable but lack of this feature is preventing me.

Thanks,

Heidi

Any update on this ? Was about to “wow” a client with Air Table, but this basic missing functionality makes it unusable.

Yeah, without this, I’m not sure if I can use AirTable; otherwise, it would have been perfect.

Just gonna throw my +1 on this feature request. Otherwise, loving the product so far!

Adding my +1 to this request. We’re linking project folders by project number, which is much easier to read than a URL. Many thanks! Please hurry. We love AirTable at our company!

An update on this feature would be great Airtable - your community is asking for it repeatedly without reply

+1 from me!

+1, I ran into this again today while trying to format a contact info field that could contain either a mailto: or slack:// scheme (thus rendering the email field type kind of useless).

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give an update on this: formulas that begin with the following whitelisted schemes will be turned into clickable URLs:

  • mailto:

  • http://

  • https://

  • ftp://

  • sftp://

  • ssh://

  • airtable://

  • slack://

  • quip://

  • omnigraffle://

  • omnioutliner://

  • omnifocus://

Discovered this yesterday, thanks Kasra! We’re almost to the point where we can get rid of the email and URL field types 🙂

Noticing that my links to Mixpanel will not function from an Airtable cell. Such links via https:// seem to mistakenly and automatically truncate after the “:” sign. e.g., the intended link https://mixpanel.com/report/99999/explore/#list/filter:(conjunction:and,filters:!((dropdown_tab_index:1,filter:(operand:‘abc@def.com’,operator:in) becomes https://mixpanel.com/report/99999/explore/#list/filter

Does this mean you can create hyperlinked text with a formula? If so, could you provide a simple example? I didn’t find one anywhere.

another +1 - we’ve been using formula hyperlinks in our tables to send webhooks, would really prefer cells show descriptive text rather than URL to inform the user what the link is for.

Another +1 here. Seems like a no-brainer.

Yup!

Here is an Airtable formula that builds a link search Amazon for a book listed in the “Title” field:

CONCATENATE(“amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=”, SUBSTITUTE(Title, " ", “+”))

I used the CONCATENTATE feature to build up the required Amazon search URL (and SUBSTITUTE to replace spaces in the title with plus signs).

If the title of the book is “The Art of Racing in the Rain” the formula will generate the following URL:

Which will do a keyword search with that title on Amazon.

The generated URL would be A LOT PRETTIER if Airtable would let us generate links appeared as underlined text… but you can’t have everything!

Once you master this technique you can build links that do all sorts of handy things:

  • Search for other books by an author

  • Search Amazon using a ISBN number (which you can read with the barcode scanner!)

  • Quicky see what technology was used to build a web site: https://builtwith.com/airtable.com

Another vote for this one. It’s the one feature that’s holding me back from fully embracing Airtable. Any ETA on when this will be implemented?
