The Chatgpt plugin for Airtable doesn’t seem to recognize that it has access to automations.. I gave the following prompt

Using Airtable, list all automations in the Personal CRM base. Include each automation’s name, deployment status, trigger, and actions.

And it gives me the below response:

I found the Personal CRM base and confirmed full access. However, the currently installed Airtable connector does not expose automation-definition tools—only bases, tables, records, fields, interfaces, and comments.

Therefore, I cannot reliably retrieve the automation names, deployment statuses, triggers, or actions through this connector. No automation list was returned.

Seems that the Official Airtable plugin is a little behind on the latest capabilities.

this page shows two methods. Skip the first and follow the steps under ‘Using a custom connector’. It works. It reads and writes to automations and interfaces. It can’t write scripts in automations yet.

Hello!

This is really just a limitation with AI in general. It read somewhere at some point that Airtable does not have that functionality, so it is just assuming that is the case.

Try explaining that Automations were recently added to the MCP or link it to the announcement article.

If you repeatedly have this issue when starting a new mcp project in airtable you can try adding a skill or a memory for this fact.

It should give you that classic “You’re absolutely right!” response once you tell it.

If that doesn’t work you might have to reconnect the connector to get the tool list to update.

@ThorsonRBAT
I did that in fact.. point it to the documentation that shows that Airtable can do that and it tried again but no results. I tried refreshing the connection but still did not work. I haven’t tried the skill yet. Do you know which skill is used for automations? Currently these are the only skills in the plugin. I don’t think any of this is the automation one.

@Ruchika_Abbi1 ,

Hmm. The next thing I would check is that the permissions you provided to ChatGPT include the read/write automations permission. If you initially configured it without global permissions, the new automation permission would not be enabled by default.

Did you authorize it via OAuth or via PAT?

The response actually sounds like the connector is the limitation, not the prompt. ChatGPT can see the Personal CRM base, but if the Airtable connector doesn't expose automation definitions, it has no way to retrieve the automation names, triggers, actions, or deployment status.

So changing the wording of the prompt probably won't help. The connector would need to support Airtable's automation metadata for this to work.

It may be worth checking whether Airtable's current MCP or connector supports automations yet, or whether this requires a different integration with the necessary permissions.

@VikasVimal Yes, I think this is the issue. I will try that. Claude connector is the latest, no such issue in claude.
