Question

link two tables

TINKEZ

Hello,

I linked Table A.field5 to Table B. Table B contains several fields: field1, field2, field3, etc.

I changed Table B.field3 to make it the primary field and hid all the other fields. Unfortunately, in the dropdown menu for Table A.field5, all the fields from Table B still appear.

I also tried creating a view, but I get the same result.

My question is: is it possible to limit which fields from Table B are displayed in the dropdown?

Thank you for your help ( i am a beginner)

Hi, yes, this is possible. The fields you’re seeing in the linked-record dropdown are controlled by the primary field of the linked table, so hiding the other fields won’t necessarily remove them from the dropdown.

If your goal is to have only specific records/options available when selecting a value in Table A, there are a couple of ways to structure this depending on what you’re trying to achieve. If you can share a screenshot of the two tables and the linked field settings, I can point you in the right direction

Hi Tinkez -

In Table B, you should be able to make a new view ("Picker") and hide every field except field3. Then go to Table A, edit field5, and turn on "Limit record selection to a view," choosing the Picker view.

Now when you click to add a link, you'll only see what's in that view. You can also add a filter to it if you only want certain records showing up as options.

Hope that helps.

Hm, the behaviour for this varies depending on where you’re looking at it I’m afraid.  I’ve put some examples below

If you’re doing this via the data layer in a Grid view, I don’t think there’s a way to limit what additional fields show up and you may want to submit that as a feature request here: https://community.airtable.com/p/product-ideas

Perhaps you could try updating that to be a List view, which doesn’t show the additional fields?

A bit confusing, but in Interfaces the Grid view doesn’t show the additional fields and so you could potentially move your users there instead if you want to use the Grid:

And in Forms you can choose which additional fields to display via the ‘Fields’ input:

Yeah, I think the best solution for you is to move over to using an interface page of some kind. In most interface pages you can specify the fields displayed or not displayed on a linked record selection dropdown.

If you must keep using the data layer, a silly hacky solution would be to add 4 fields in table B, titled BlankA, BlankB, BlankC, BlankD, and make them the first 4 columns after your primary field. Then you can hide them in all the views you’re actually using on Table B haha.
