Day 7 of the 12 Days of AI Plays: Create automations with Omni

🎁 Welcome to Day 7 of the 12 Days of AI Plays!

Today we’re tackling one of the most powerful Airtable AI features — automations created by Omni that move data seamlessly across your workflows.

Instead of manually wiring steps together, today’s challenge is to let Omni build the automation for you.
Your goal is to prompt Omni to generate an automation that coordinates work between the Toys, Packages, and Delivery Routes tables… all triggered by one simple event.

Think of it as your North Pole assembly line — fully automated.

Your Challenge

Ask Omni to build an automation with the following:

• Trigger: When a record in the Toys table changes its Status to “In Progress.”
• Actions:
  • Generate Wrapping Instructions (Packages Table)
    • The Packages table already includes the AI Wrapping Instructions field from Day 5.
    • Tell Omni that the automation should:
      • Create or update the corresponding Package record
      • Trigger the AI Wrapping Instructions field to populate for the toy
      • Pass along the toy name, assigned elf, and priority
  • Assign a Delivery Route (Delivery Routes Table)
    • Create or update a record in Delivery Routes
    • Run an AI field  that determines the correct route

    • Include routing notes if needed (weather, fragility, timing)

  • Generate an email notification to the assigned Elf letting them know there’s been a status update to a toy they’re assigned to.

    • Hint: you can test this out by adding your email address to the Elves table

Here’s an example of how you might prompt Omni in natural language, but you can refine, iterate, and regenerate until the automation looks exactly the way you want.

“Create an Airtable Automation that triggers when Toy Status changes to ‘In Progress.’ Step 1: Create or update the Package record and generate AI Wrapping Instructions. Step 2: Assign the package to the correct Delivery Route. Then send an email with all of this information about the toy to the assigned elf. Build the full automation with all steps configured.”
