Hey Airtable, Would be awesome if there could be a better way (a new type of table) to create a 2D junction table between regular tables. Example: Table 1: SCENES from a movie Table 2: CHARACTERS from a movie Table 3: COSTUMES available for the movie Junction 2D table: COSTUMES that are worn in a given scene by the characters Note that: we need to know which costume is assigned to which character a given costume can be worn by one actor in a scene and worn by another actor in another scene Therefore, an easy way to represent that junction table junction table would be as a matrix (classic excel): Where we would choose the 2 tables that populates the rows & columns (here SCENES & CHARACTERS) with all their possible values and we would add the junction values directly in the grid where needed. The COSTUMES table also exist as regular table on its own since it may be useful to describe other attributes for each costume. The problem is of course that with Airtable as it is today, when the number of records of the tables you want to join gets high and is subject to regular changes, it’s a pain to maintain a proper junction table (where every combination must be entered manually). I also thought, maybe the new matrix block can help to avoid creating a junction table, but that means the results are not representing the data from my original example anymore. (I recreated in Excel the result of the matrix block to make it more compact) So a 2D table type that could be used as easy junction tables would be super great ! Any supporters about this feature ? This one’s a little complicated to explain in the abstract, so I’ll give you an example: Let’s say I’ve got a table of Students and a table of Classes. The primary key on the Classes table is a number field rather than a single-line text field, the number corresponding to the graduation year. In the Students table, there is a field that is a link to the Classes table, so that each student can be associated with their graduating class. Let’s say we have a student named John Smith who graduated in 2015. The record for student John Smith would have associated class of “2015”, which links to all the properties of class “2015”. Now, lets say I’m on the Students table and want to filter out all students who graduated before 2014. When I hit Filter while viewing the Students table and chose the Class field (that is, the field that links to the Class table) the filter options I’m given correspond to single-line text (contains, does not contain, is/n’t empty) rather than the data type of the primary key, number. For this purpose, that wouldn’t work very well as I would like to be able to filter students based on class number being greater than or equal to 2014. As a team member, I would like the ability to temporarily filter and sort on a column without changing the view settings so that I can perform some quick analysis without creating a bunch of separate views or messing up the current view. As a base owner, I would like the default sort, filter, and grouping actions for a column to NOT change the view definition so that one team member doesn’t accidentally mess up the view for the whole team. Instead, there should be a separate action to “update view definition based on current view settings”. It would be really useful to be able to set the order that fields appear when a record is expanded. The order of the fields in the table view should be reflected in the order of the fields when a record is expanded. While we love the Row Height option in some of our views, we struggle with how images within attachment fields are previewed. Currently, each image within an attachment field fills the full height of the row/record. This is a sub-optimal use of screen real estate. Instead, we suggest a thumbnail scale option within the field settings. This could be a slider, or simply a choice between 1-up, 2-up and 3-up thumbnail grids.
