Starting yesterday, Airtable rolled out a new sidebar in the left margin to display the views in our base. This is fine, but please stop auto-opening this sidebar by default. Every time we refresh our web browser or enter a base, this view sidebar auto-opens. It takes up a significant amount of screen real estate, and it is a real pain to continually be closing this new sidebar. Every time we enter a base, we have to close the view sidebar again. The vast majority of people aren’t continually switching views constantly throughout the day. For this to be ever-present and taking up a significant amount of screen real estate is not helpful. This should stay closed by default. p.s. The old view switcher was not difficult to find or use.

Views are useful, but sometimes a view needs to have lots of information in it regardless to be useful. Side scrollling with dozens of columns can be unwieldy and difficult to navigate (especially as the user adds new columns in different views, and they automatically place them at the end of other views). Colour coding and/or being able to group columns would seemingly be a simple to implement and very useful functionality. Grouping columns would be nice for tabbing between views and being able to move a bunch of columns at once (or unhide a column and have it snap to it's "group").

When Grouping by a linked record or multiple select field, I would like the option to split by multiple values, similar to how the Chart and Pivot Table Blocks work. Right now, grouping by a multiple select or linked record field crates new groups for each combination of values in the field. I would like groups for each individual value instead.

What is the proposed idea/solution? When creating a form view, it would be great to set a question's available linked records to be filtered based on a previous questions answer. For example, Q1 is to select a contractor or team from our list of contractors (linked record from a resources base). Then Q2 is to select a project to submit the form against, but ONLY show linked project records that are assigned to the contractor team in Q1 so that the team selected can only see and select their projects, not other teams projects as to only serve a limited list and ensure our teams don't make a mistake in project selection. How does is solve the user problems? Opens up additional use cases for form flexibility. Solves our problem of not being able to have a curated and limited selection list of projects for each team. How was this validated? We send a form weekly to our contractor teams that do work for our agency to submit their hours worked per project so we can calculate project costs, margin...etc. At the moment, the teams can select their name / team from the list to submit hours for, but when they choose a project to submit against, they see all the projects that are active instead of just theirs. This leads to mistakes in teams selecting the wrong project and submitting hours to the wrong records. I could create unique forms for each team separately, but that is tedious and not scalable in managing all of our resources to add / remove new forms for each new team. I'd like one form that can serve up a curated list of linked records dynamically based on the answer to a previous question instead of a hard coded logic filter. Who is the target audience? ...

What is the proposed idea/solution? In interface page layouts, add the ability to collapse groups so that the header is visible but the fields nested beneath are not. An added bonus would be the ability to select whether a group is expanded or collapsed by default in the page template.... How does is solve the user problems? I have several interface page views that are quite long, and not all groups are applicable to all records. Allowing me to collapse the groups that are not relevant would make it easier for me to see and edit the most important information efficiently. How was this validated? This is generally accepted as useful functionality and exists in other places in the Airtable app. Google docs just recently added this functionality as well. Who is the target audience? Anyone using interface page views with many forms/groups

To get an overview for long-term project planning, a “Year view” in Calendar is needed. Gant charts aren’t usable for my usage case because every task needs to be on a different line. This way, information is scattered and I can’t get a decent overview. (If grouping items on a gant chart didn’t merge all of the different subitems into one big blurp but kept different tasks with their start and end dates on the same line… Yes, then it would be useful, then it would be great. - But that’s for a different feature request. Let’s stick to a Year option in Calendar view as for now. Easy to implement, so…)

I share views with people outside my organization and I’d like for them to be able to comment on the records they can see. They don’t need the ability to modify records (even though it would be nice) but they should be able to comment.

Currently any fields that are hidden on a form will be empty when the form is submitted. It would be nice to be able to set hidden form fields to a default value. For example, let’s say I have a “wizards” table: Name | House | Level Harry P | Gryffindor | 1 Ron W | Gryffindor | 1 And I have a wizard form that asks for Name and House, but Level is hidden. I would like all form submissions to automatically enter 1 for the level. I do NOT want this field shown or to use the prefill_ method because that would let people set their own level—and we all know that Malfoy kid would set it to 5 or something inappropriate. At the moment, the only way I can do this is to use an external form system and an integration like Zapier which lets me set the default when mapping to Airtable.

What is the proposed idea/solution? This idea proposes more dynamic options for scaling, rotating or providing 'hovering information' for text in Field Headings so they are readable when columns are narrow in Grid View and List Views. Currently text very easily becomes truncated and unreadable. Row height helps with field contents but not Field Headings. Hovering only works if there is a Description in the Field. Note: this idea is essentially requesting behavior that you see in most spreadsheet programs. Here is a typical Grid view... When you shrink the columns it looks like this which is too easily truncated and unreadable... Proposed Idea A: Enable hovering context information for all text whether there is a Description in the Field or not. If there is a Field Description it would be displayed underneath the Field Name in the floating context window. Proposed Idea B: Field Names can be rotated (similar to spreadsheets). Maybe 45 and 90 (as shown below) Field Names and all other text scales down to ~6 point before it begins truncating. Like the 'In Progress' text below Overall make the margins in all fields super tight. Field Row Height can be changed so the text wraps and stacks. (Not shown below but you get the idea) ... How does is solve the user problems? Keeps information readable when trying to conserve screen real-estate. ... How was this validated? Not validated yet. ... Who is the target audience? Creators who are trying to show as much information as possible on the screen while keeping information readable. ...
